Weekend Picks July 29-31

Whether you need to escape the hot temperatures or dry off from rain this weekend, The National Gallery of Art has a program for your Bambinos! Music: Listen to a Concert where you will step inside a music concert and then listen to a live lute performance. The summer series focuses on discovering Dutch Art designed for children ages 4-7. Pack your imagination and travel to the National Gallery of Art!  There are various times Saturday-Monday to enjoy this.

Friday-

6:30pm-8:30pm: Concert (food, splashing, drinks) at Yards Park
(355 Water Street SE Washington DC 20003)
The free Capitol Riverfront Friday Night Concert Series is back for its 6th Season, this year on the Great Lawn of Yards Park! Every Friday night this summer, come to Yards Park to relax and enjoy the river view, fantastic bands, food and beverage, and a large variety of great restaurants within a 5-minute walk from the park. Family-friendly lyrics and grassy open space make this an enjoyable event for adults and kids alike.

Lots of live music tonight! 

8:00pm: Four Mile Summer Movie Festival at Four Mile Conservatory Building: Back to the Future
(4109 Mt Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA 22305)
Beginning at dusk and will have Spanish subtitles, bring  blanket or chair. Admission is free, so is popcorn and drinks. Presented by National Community Church.

Saturday-

9:00am: Precious Cargo: An Introduction to Biking With Toddlers
(corner of 7th St. and Independence Ave. SE)
Join us for an outing designed for parents who want to become more comfortable biking with toddlers. We’ll talk about safety and preparing for an outing, then go for a group ride with a stop at a neighborhood play space. All bikes, child seats, helmets and snacks provided. Whether you want to begin including your little one in your daily commute, use your bike more for everyday transportation, or simply share your love of biking with your toddler and spend more time together outdoors, this is the perfect way to get started.

9:30am AND 10:30am: Harambee at Bloombars
(3222 11th St NW)
Five years and more than 700 shows later, Harambee @BloomBars has become a Washington DC institution and a cultural/moral compass for thousands of parents and youth. In Swahili, Harambe means “All pull together.” At BloomBars, Harambe is the practice of hope, possibility and compassion – basically, all the things that happen when we all come together.

10:30am:Maryland Youth Ballet – Caroline Goes to the Circus at Wolf Trap Children’sTheatre-in-the-Woods

Caroline is off to the circus where she and her friends experience the excitement of a tightrope walker, a wild pony, and much more! Enjoy a morning of wonder and see what Caroline will get into next!

1:00pm-11:00pm: National Dance Day at Kennedy Center
(2700 F St NW)
The Kennedy Center and Dizzy Feet Foundation, in conjunction with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, present a free celebration of National Dance Day featuring interactive dance routines and lessons, free outdoor performances, live music, and more!

4:00pm: That’s My Girl Parent-Child Bike Outing
(corner of 7th St. and Independence Ave. SE)
Calling all tough little girls and the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandmas and others who have their backs. This is an outing for young girls and those who support them. Here at Recess, we believe outdoor play has the power to make our girls brave, resilient and strong, so our newest outing celebrates athletic women young and old as we lead by example and embrace the fresh air. On these monthly explorations of DC with our strong outdoorsy girls, we’ll pedal past several monuments and landmarks devoted to inspirational women.

Sunday-

11:00am-12:00pm: Family Yoga at Bloombars
(3222 11th St NW)
This family class will explore the practice of yoga through music, dance, relaxation and play. Families will have the chance to connect in a meaningful and fun way, while also giving each family member the chance to breathe, stretch and relax. This community-based class will inspire connection and awareness in a nurturing and playful environment. Make the time to share mindful and heart-opening practices with your family, no matter the age or experience level. Come breathe, move and play with us every Sunday!

3:30pm-4:15pm: Sunday Funday at Imagination Stage
(4908 Auburn Avenue Bethesda, MD 20814)
We invite you and your child to celebrate summer with us as we bring your favorite stories to life through dramatic play activities, movement, music, and visual art. Each session you leave with a special take-home item we used or created that day, as well as a Parent Pack to extend the experience at home. These popular workshops are themed around beloved children’s books. Featured story: Down By The Station

6:00 pm: THE GRANDSONS at Lubber Run Amphitheatre
(North Columbus Street & 2nd Street North Arlington, Virginia 22203)
Now in their 29th year, this legendary band recently won two 2015 WAMMIE awards: “Best Roots Rock Band” and for the Grandsons Jr (their moniker for the kids-oriented music) “Best Childrens Artist”. Having toured Europe, Asia and Canada, a fan aptly described The Grandsons exuberant sound as “American music in a blender with the lid off.” The more prominent elements in this eclectic whirlpool are New Orleans rhythm and blues, rockabilly, swing and country two steps.

6:00pm: Movies on the Potomac at National Harbor: The Little Rascals

Nothing says summer like an evening under the stars—and there’s no better way to enjoy the season than Movies on the Potomac at National Harbor. Pack your picnic blankets, grab food to go from one of our delicious dining establishments, and meet us at the Plaza’s big screen for a FREE evening of fun for all ages!
