Weekend Picks January 13-15

Saturday- 

8:30am-9:30am: Capoeira for Kids Ages 3.5-7 at Bloombars
(3222 11th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001)
Capoeira provides physical fitness for children, ages 4 and up. It is intended to be a no- to low-contact martial art that helps children with gross motor planning and gross motor skills. Children will also learn maculele (a dance done hitting sticks against your partner’s sticks), samba, capoeira instruments, and Portuguese through this fun, interactive class. Classes are $15 each or $120 for a series of ten classes.

9:30am AND 10:30am: Harambe with Baba Ras D at Bloombars
(3222 11th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001)
Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community.With more than 10 years of experience in youth development, education and conflict resolution, program instructor Baba Ras D’s “Harambe” is a morning jolt of inspiration for parents, caregivers and children. Recommended for ages 0 to 7 years.  $7 per child $3 per adult suggested donation.

10:00am-1:00pm: Bilingual Education Fair at Francis Gregory Library
(3660 Alabama Avenue SE Washington, DC 20020)
Why foster bilingualism in children, how to support and encourage bilingualism even when parents are monolinguals, and where to find bilingual programs and resources in DC. Come learn about all of this and more from teachers, exhibitors and fellow parents during DC’s first Bilingual Education Fair. Participate with your child in one of four story times in Hebrew, French, Mandarin, German, Amharic and Spanish, and discover why children are such born linguists.

11:00am-3:00pm: Create DC Arts Festival at Union Market Dock 5
(1309 5th St NE)
The Create DC Arts Festival is bringing together a FREE vibrant network of DCPS arts teachers, teaching artists, and local arts organizations for an afternoon of creative play. Families across the city are invited to join us in experiencing the visual arts, drama, dance, and music through hands-on interactive workshops and collaborative making stations as we celebrate the arts. All are welcome to create – or be – art at Create DC.

11:00am-5:00pm: Theatre Festival at Rosslyn Spectrum
(1611 N Kent St “LL” Level, Arlington, VA 22209)
Have fun, enjoy and share in the excitement of theatre, magic, music, dance and more all are bilingual. $15 adults, $10 children 13 and under, 3 and under are free.

1:00pm-2:30pm: Woodshop For Kids at the National Building Museum
(401 F Street NW Washington, D.C. 20001)
Come and learn about one of the simplest tools – the hammer. This introduction to hammer and nails is part one in a new series of workshops geared towards kids who like to build and create. We’ll teach you how to properly hold and use a hammer, which nails are best for the job, then give you space to practice mastering this tool. Participants will create nail art to take home and display (pictured). $15 members, $20 non-members. Ages 7 and up. Adult supervision required. Accompanying adults do no need to purchase a second ticket unless they would like to complete a nail art project as well. 

Sunday-

10:00am AND 11:15am: Blue at Imagination Stage
(4908 Auburn Avenue Bethesda, MD 20814)
Imagine a world where the only color is blue. Blue flowers, blue grass, even blue cereal! Inky and Pale live in such a world until they discover something RED! Tickets are $14. The My First Imagination Stage theatre series offers intimate, interactive performances designed for the very young in our Reeve Theatre.
