Weekend picks for families in and around Washington, DC

It’s a big weekend and one we are thrilled to tell you all about. Big Apple Circus is in town at the National Harbor through March 24 and my kids can’t stop talking about it! Read more about the show here

Thursday through Saturday you can head to Kennedy Center to witness The National Symphony Orchestra perform John Williams’s iconic Oscar®-nominated score from The Force Awakens performed live along with the full feature film.

The Atlas INTERSECTIONS Festival is a performing arts festival that presents work that impacts our society, culture, and world by informing, inspiring, educating, and entertaining. INTERSECTIONS is about presenting excellent art that inspires a connected community, engaged artists and audiences alike, and creates a vibrant neighborhood, city, and world. The Festival runs from February 21-March 3, 2019. Saturday is a Family Fun Day and is has free and ticketed performances for kids and their grown-up friends! Kid Flicks One at National Gallery of Art Saturday, February 23 at 10:30am and Sunday, February 24 at 11:30am in the East Building Auditorium. Kid Flicks One is a compilation of short films featuring innovative animation from the New York International Children’s Film Festival. This lively international lineup of fun offers short films from Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Russia, Sweden, and the United States. Approximately 52 minutes and best for ages 4 and up.

Saturday

10:00am: Marsha and the Positrons at the Avalon Theatre
Marsha and the Positrons are back! This time they will be celebrating the release of their new album, Positronic. Both playful and educational, Marsha and the Positrons will get audiences singing and dancing to songs that inspire curiosity about science. The group also plays kid-appropriate pop covers, parodies, and traditional favorites. Their goal is to send families home with smiles on their faces and plant the seeds for interesting conversations.

10:30am-11:15am: Saturday Song Circle at Imagination Stage
You and your child are invited to a fun, interactive musical experience! An Early Childhood teaching artist explores a popular children’s book; Dinosaur Pet with your family through song, musical instruments, and movement. Plus, you receive a list of all the songs to practice at home.

1:00pm and 4:00pm: The Okee Dokee Brothers at McLean Community Center
As childhood friends growing up in Denver Colorado, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing were always exploring the outdoors. Now, as the GRAMMY® Award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers, they have put this passion for the outdoors at the heart of their Americana Folk music and hope that it will inspire children and their parents to get outside and get creative

1:30pm: Silly Goose & Val at Port Discovery Children’s Museum
The new Discovery Stage Series at Port Discovery Children’s Museum just adds one more reason to head there.Join us for Parent’s Award Winner – and kid favorite performance – Silly Goose and Val! Enjoy watching your child interact with the show and musical adventure through puppets, ventriloquism, dancing and singing! Learn more about Silly Goose & Val here.  Performances will encourage children to sing and dance along, and will provide opportunities for children to be active participants.

Sunday

10:00am-12:00pm: Sweet treats workshop at Red Panda Art Studio
Each workshop includes a variety of art and sensory activities related to the day’s theme.During this workshop, we will create sweet treats in multiple mediums— none of them edible, but all of them bright and colorful! Drop-off welcome.

11:00am and 3:00pm: Laurie Berkner Band at the Gordon Performing Arts Center
Don’t miss the whimsical pop lyrics and melodies of the artist People magazine deemed “the queen of children’s music.”

11:00am: Sunday Funday at Imagination Stage
Explore popular children’s book, The Day the Crayons Quit, through music, movement and visual art.

2:00pm-4:00pm: Concert by DC-based women’s trio Eya: Ensemble for Medieval Music at Dumbarton Oaks
Eya and Niccolo Seligmann will perform for 30 minutes at 2:00pm and again at 3:30pm This engaging and family-friendly experience will take place in the Music Room. Be sure to join Seligmann for a medieval instrument demonstration after the first performance and come to a Q&A with the full ensemble after the last performance. Featuring more than 100 objects, Juggling the Middle Ages explores the influence of the medieval world by focusing on a single story with a long-lasting impact—Le Jongleur de Notre Dame or Our Lady’s Tumbler. The exhibit follows the tale from its rediscovery by scholars in the 1870s to its modern interpretations in children’s books, offering viewers a look at a vast range of objects, including stained glass windows, illuminated manuscripts, household objects, and vintage theater posters.
