Weekend Picks Aug 12-14

Didn’t get enough carnival rides and fried twinkles on the boardwalk this summer? Head over to the Montgomery County Fair. It is happening through Saturday, August 12-20. Fair and carnival hours vary as do animal exhibits in Old MacDonald’s Barn. Children 11 and under are FREE while adults cost $10. Check the schedule for daily events.

Prince William County Fair is also happening through Saturday, August 12-20.

The Nationals are in town and have some fun promotions and events happening, including Freedom Fireworks on Friday and Star Wars Day on Saturday.

Jumanji and The Little Mermaid are showing this weekend.

9:30am AND 10:30am: Harambee at Bloombars

Five years and more than 700 shows later, Harambee @BloomBars has become a Washington DC institution and a cultural/moral compass for thousands of parents and youth. In Swahili, Harambe means “All pull together.” At BloomBars, Harambe is the practice of hope, possibility and compassion – basically, all the things that happen when we all come together.

11:00am: The Great Zucchini at MLK Library
(901 G St. NW Washington,  D.C.  20001)The Great Zucchini is back! Known as one of the most popular children’s performers in the region, The Great Zucchini brings his wacky and zany antics to our Great Hall.

2:00pm: Star Wars Marathon at Warner Theatre

The movies “A New Hope”, “Empire Strikes Back”, and “Return of the Jedi” will be shown.

Sunday-

11:00am-12:00pm: Family Yoga at Bloombars

This family class will explore the practice of yoga through music, dance, relaxation and play. Families will have the chance to connect in a meaningful and fun way, while also giving each family member the chance to breathe, stretch and relax. This community-based class will inspire connection and awareness in a nurturing and playful environment. Make the time to share mindful and heart-opening practices with your family, no matter the age or experience level. Come breathe, move and play with us every Sunday!

11:30am: Pixar Shorts at National Gallery of Art
(6th and Constitution NW)
Celebrate 30 years of animated shorts from Pixar Animation Studios.  Beginning with the delightful Luxo Jr. (John Lasseter, 1986), the first computer-animated film nominated for an Academy Award, this collection of shorts showcases Pixar’s contributions to the art of filmmaking. The series will include hilarious favorites: For the Birds (Ralph Eggleston, 2001), Mike’s New Car (Pete Docter and Roger Gould, 2003), and One Man Band (Mark Andrews and Andrew Jimenez, 2006). Approximately 45 minutes.

3:30pm-4:15pm: Sunday Funday at Imagination Stage

We invite you and your child to celebrate summer with us as we bring your favorite stories to life through dramatic play activities, movement, music, and visual art. Each session you leave with a special take-home item we used or created that day, as well as a Parent Pack to extend the experience at home.
