Weekend Picks

This weekends post is full of fun on Saturday! Be sure and check out our Indoor Fun post as well as the Theater Roundup post so you have a warm place to escape to as the weather gets cooler.

Friday-

6:00pm: Family Movie Night Inside Out playing at Marie Reed Auditorium
(18th and Wyoming Sts. NW)
Admission is free, and concessions will be sold.  Come join the fun hosted by Marie Reed Elementary School PTA.

6:30pm: The Singing Lizard at Bloombars
(3222 11th St NW)
Shes back in town this weekend. Catch her if you can!

Saturday-

9:30am & 11:00am: Barynya at The National Theatre
(1321 Pennsylvania Ave NW, DC. 20004)
The rich traditions and culture of Russia come alive with this troupe of three classically trained musicians and dancers who present engaging music, vibrant dance, comedy and interaction. Tickets are free.

10:00am-12:00pm: Saturday Art Workshop at The Kreeger
(2401 Foxhall Road, NW Washington D.C. 20007)
Following a walk through the woods (weather permitting), participants will build wood sculptures with found natural objects – acorns, pine cones, twigs, magnolia pods and other items discovered on Museum grounds. The students also explore sculptural themes including balance, color, scale, color and texture. Ages 8+. Registration fee per child: $20, Children of members: $15.

10:00am-12:00pm: Art Projects for Kids at Reston Arts Center
(11400 Washington Plaza West, Lake Anne, Reston, VA. 20190)
Bust up that cabin fever and get the creative juices flowing at Reston Art Gallery and Studio’s free weekly crafts program. Just show up and you’ll be ushered into the world of marshmallow sculptures, paper plate decor, and more! There’s a new creation each week and it’s free!

10:00am-5:00pm: Renwick Family Festival
(Pennsylvania Avenue at 17th Street NW Washington, D.C. 20006)
Experience the Renwick Gallery as never before (after a 2 year renovation the Gallery is open), with craft making, artist demonstrations, musical performances, and more. Come see the new contemporary art installations of the WONDER exhibition and enjoy a fun-filled day with activities for all ages. The Singing Lizard is in town and making a 3 day tour in our area. Check the schedule for details.

10:30am-11:15am: Saturday Song Circle at Imagination Stage
(4908 Auburn Avenue Bethesda, Maryland 20814)
You and your child are invited to a fun, interactive musical experience! An Early Childhood Teaching Artist explores a popular children’s book with your family through song and musical instruments, and you will receive a list of all the songs to practice at home. Activities in Saturday Song Circle are best for 1-3 year-olds but 4-5 year-old siblings and friends are also welcome to join in the fun. Don’t Worry, Be Happy is the story this weekend. $8 per person.

10:30am-12:30pm: Fall Gratitude Festival at Stead Park
(1625 P Street NW Washington, DC 20036)
Join at Stead Park for a morning of gratitude and fun.  Enjoy a concert by Rocknoceros, help make a Gratitude Tree, get your face painted and more! They are collecting new and gently used adult and children’s books, maps and DVDs to donate to Books for America. This event is free.

11:00am-3:15pm: Family Day at Hirshhorn Museum
(7th Street and Independence Avenue SW)
The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden invites visitors young and old to a day of family fun inspired by our exhibition Marvelous Objects: Surrealist Sculpture from Paris to New York. All events are suitable for all ages.

12:00pm-7:00pm: National Harbor’s Tree Lighting
(165 Waterfront Street National Harbor, MD 20745)
Kick off the season with National Harbor’s Tree Lighting ceremony! Join us for a full day of holiday fun, topped off by our annual tree lighting! We’ll have tons of holiday activities – from the opening weekend of the Harbor Holiday Market to live music and holiday movie screenings – there’s holiday enjoyment for everyone at National Harbor. A few of the activities you won’t want to miss– 2:00pm-4:00pm: Harbor Holiday Movies: The Muppet Christmas Carol, 5:00pm: Santa at the Carousel & 6:45pm: Fireworks.

Sunday-

10:00am: Story Time at DCJCC
(1529 16th Street NW, Washington DC 20036)
An hour of free play, songs, and stories. Enjoy free play in our preschool space from 10:00-10:30, then gather on the carpet from 10:30-11 for stories and songs led by a DCJCC Preschool teacher. This program is intended for children ages 0-4 and their caregivers. Admission is FREE and no registration is required.
