Weekday Adventures: Pumpkin Harvest Days and Postal Museum birthday celebration

Pumpkin Harvest Days begin on Thursday at Butler’s Orchard. Pumpkin Harvest Days activities include exploring the learning stations, jumping in the hayloft barn, swooshing down the giant slides, visiting barnyard animals, picking a pumpkin in the pumpkin patch, and exploring the straw maze. Pumpkin Harvest Days are self-guided. You may do any activity in any order as
many times as you like! Book your reservation here. 

 

Many new theater productions start this week. Including The Night Fairy and Under the Canopy. Be sure and reserve your tickets!

Monday-

9:30am: Harambe at Bloombars

Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community.

9:30am-11:00am: Rise and Rhyme at Busboys and Poets
(5531 Baltimore Ave., Hyattsville, Md. 20781)
Rise + Rhyme is a weekly Busboys and Poets series for local stay-at-home parents and early rising families of all kinds! Featuring performances and stories for children ages 5 and under. This week’s featured performer is The Singing Lizard.

10:30am-11:00am: Songs and stories at Politics and Prose
(5015 Connecticut Ave. NW Washington, DC 20008)

Come sing-along to your favorite songs. Grab a treat in the cafe afterwards or hang out reading books.

4:30pm: Children’s book reading at Childs Play
(5536 Connecticut Ave NW)
Temple Sinai teacher, Allison Soffer will be reading her first book, Apple Days; a book about Rosh Hashanah.

Tuesday-

10:00am: Samba Baby at Bloombars (It’s back!!!)

It’s never too early to learn the infectious dance of the world’s 5th largest country and there’s no better teacher then Zezeh Zax– a dancer, professional performer of Brazilian samba and founder of the ZEZEH BRAZIL Dance Troupe. Get your baby movin and groovin!

10:00am: Rocking Tot Tuesdays with The Singing Lizard at Bloombars

Grab an instrument, get on stage or practice your moves on the dance floor. This is a perfect spot for your little one to move and groove. Suggested donation $7.

11:00am: Storytime at Barnes and Noble

Kids of all ages are invited to dress from head to toe in their favorite color and enjoy a special story time reading of, Don’t Let the Crayons Quit: Skippyjon Jones in Mummy Trouble. 

Wednesday-

10:30am: Boogie Babes presents !Uno, Dos, Tres con Andres!  at Union Market

Access the free market parking lot from 6th Street NE or travel via metro to NoMA-Gallaudet. Come early for coffee and stay for lunch!

5:30pm: !Uno, Dos, Tres con Andres! at BloomBars

!Uno, Dos, Tres con Andres! is a sure bet every time. Children of various ages enjoy this interactive show that teaches Spanish language and Latin American culture.

Thursday-

(100 Maryland Ave, SW, Washington, DC 20001- Conservatory Garden Court)
Do you have a tiny treasure in a snuggly? Looking for ways to get out of the house, and learn? Join us each Thursday for a 45-minute guided tour of the Conservatory. Each week will be a different exploration. This program is designed for parents and care providers who have a tiny one in a snuggly. Please note: Due to narrow paths and the nature of this program, they cannot support strollers or older siblings.

10:30am-11:15am: Hillwood Estate Preschool Program: Fanciful Heroes
(4155 Linnean Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20008)
Hunt for dragons, make a hero’s cape, and explore a fantastical world of adventure. Experience the wonder of Hillwood with your preschooler! Explore a new mansion room each week of this three-part series through make believe, art projects, and imaginative play. $30 per child (age 2-5) with one accompanying adult; $25 member; $15 additional adults. 10:00am-11:30am: Family Hike to the Planets at Meadowside Nature Center
(5100 Meadowside Ln., Rockville)
Take a tour of the solar system without leaving Earth. Visit each planet in our tiny portion of the universe during this mile-long hike. Children and adults must register and pay. Not suitable for strollers. 3 and up $5.

10:30am: Boogie Babes at Eastern Market

Our most popular show of the week! Join us at Historic Eastern Market’s North Hall (closest to South Carolina) for a lively concert, grab lunch and shop for dinner. Access to the North Hall via the market for Boogie Babes. Eastern Market Metro is two short blocks away.

10:30am: The Great Zucchini at Jammin Java

Get tickets here for The Great Zucchini, Washington’s funniest and most magical preschool and kindergarten entertainer, performs a colorful magic show where every child is a star and guaranteed to laugh. Experience the excitement of the children when they get to learn a magic trick at the end of show.

12:00pm-2:00pm: The National Postal Museum is 100
(2 Massachusetts Ave., N.E. Washington, D.C. 20002)
The Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the building it calls home with a lunchtime program of events.In celebration of building’s prestigious history, special activities, tours and programs will be offered in the Historic Lobby. Free Petite Cupcakes by Sweet Lobby, Live Music by the Capital Hillbillies (Tunes from the early 20th Century), 20 min. Architectural Tours by National Building Museum Senior Curator, Martin Moeller at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.., Historic Printing Press (Spider Press) Demonstration and a Historic Photos Slideshow.

1:00pm: Otis the Owl Storytime at Meadowside Nature Center

We will read stories about owls and meet our mascot Otis the Owl, so bring your camera! 2-10 years $3. 

Friday-

10:00am: Songs, stories & puppets at Bloombars

30 minutes of storytelling, dancing, singing and entertainment just for kids under 5.

10:30am: Rocknoceros at Jammin Java
(227 Maple Ave E Vienna, VA 22180)
Rocknoceros is a sensational three-man band hailing from Fairfax, Virginia, performing original children’s songs and much-loved favorites. NPR calls them, An outstanding mix of folk and rock…literate songs….multi-generational appeal. Wildly popular, award-winning music for the whole family! Tickets are $5.

10:30am: Boogie Babes at Atlas Performing Arts
(1333 H Street NE Washington, DC. 20002)
Join us at the ATLAS Performing Arts Center along the H Street Corridor. Snack bar and bathrooms are easily accessible. Lots of good and kid-friendly lunch options within one to three blocks!

2:00pm-4:00pm: Afternoon Aviators at College Park Aviation Museum 
(1985 Cpl. Frank Scott Drive, College Park 20740)
Afternoon Aviators is a weekly series for children ages five and up. Join us for fun hands-on aviation themed activities. Activities range from making your own paper airplane to playing a game of aviation bingo. This program is held every Friday from 2pm to 4pm and is free with regular museum admission.
