Wolf Trap isn’t just for adults, there are great family shows too! If you do go sans Bambinos, remember to bring a picnic, drinks and blanket and make an entire evening out of it. For the Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods performances, you can’t have your picnic at the show but once it is finished you can enjoy it in the big grassy field or at one of the tables.

**NSO Family Concert: *Because* (World Premiere)**

March 5-6, 2022: NSO Music for Young Audiences: I Dream of the Moon & Xavier’s New Friends
I Dream of the Moon (A Young Boy’s Adventure Through Space) by Keeghan Fountain tells the story of a young boy’s journey from his own backyard to the furthest reaches of the moon in a non-verbal performance on the vibraphone with projected images of original artwork by Nehemiah Russell. Xavier’s New Friends by Peter Gilbert introduces the main percussion family instruments through Xavier the Xylophone as he searches for percussion friends to join his band. Student musicians from the University of Maryland will join Scott to tell this story and highlight the rhythmic and melodic facets of the percussion section. Sunday, March 5 at 4pm is a sensory friendly performance. Most enjoyed by 5+.

March 11-12, 2022: “Sweet” Cherie Mitchell-Agurs
Experience the rhythm and funk of Go-go music. “SWEET” CHERIE MITCHELL-AGURS presents a performance for young people and families combining high-energy concert style presentation and dynamic musicianship. Mitchell-Agurs is Music Director of Washington D.C.’s own exciting all-female Go-go group, the Be’la Dona Band, and a six-time “Instrumentalist of the Year” for the Washington Area Music Association. Most enjoyed by 8+.

March 18-20, 2022: Pierce Freelon
Listen to the past blend with the present in a cosmic journey. Grammy-nominated producer and accomplished musician PIERCE FREELON brings two projects to the Kennedy Center displaying his inventiveness and creativity. Following his critically acclaimed debut children’s album D.a.D. in 2020, Pierce’s Grammy-nominated 2021 Black to the Future (ages 5+) features elements of Afrofuturism, Black history, and archival voices to touch on imagination, arts, science, and technology through a Black lens. Pierce is joined by his mother, jazz singer and six-time Grammy Award® nominee NNENNA FREELON for one performance. Most enjoyed by 5+.

March 20, 2022: NSO Family Concert: Because (World Premiere)
Little things can have a big effect. Because Kennedy Center Education Artist-in-Residence MO WILLEMS wrote a powerful story of how chance, discovery, and persistence changed the life of a young girl, he needed an illustrator to bring it to life. Because illustrator AMBER REN related to the hero of the story, she created magical illustrations. Because the book moved them, the NSO wanted to turn it into an orchestral piece. Because acclaimed composer and violinist JESSIE MONTGOMERY was also changed by music as a young person, she composed the score. Because is a world premiere symphonic exploration that you and your loved ones want to see and hear to become part of the story. Sunday, March 20 at 2pm is a sensory friendly performance. Most enjoyed by 5+.

April 9-10, 2022: NSO Music for Young Audiences: Super Cello! (World Premiere)
Music to the rescue! The city is safe with the help of a unique cellist: professional musician by day, superhero by night. SCOTTIE ROWELL of Atlanta’s TELLER PRODUCTIONS and NSO cellist DAVID TEIE unite to tell a fantastic story using puppets, props, and plenty of music to help a very super musician save the day. Sunday, April 10 at 4pm is a sensory friendly performance. Most enjoyed by 3+.

May 15, 2022: NSO Family Concert: Philharmonia Fantastique: The Making of an Orchestra
Join a concerto for orchestra and animation. Dynamic concerto meets animated film! Through a mesmerizing hybrid of animated and live action filming, follow a magical Sprite as it embarks on a musical journey through the inner workings of an orchestra. Violin strings vibrate, brass valves slice air, and drum heads resonate like you’ve never seen before—all set to live music from members of the NSO. By the film’s end, the orchestra comes together in a spectacular finale! Philharmonia Fantastique was written by Kennedy Composer-in-Residence MASON BATES, and co-created with Academy Award-nominated director/writer GARY RYDSTROM, and Academy Award nominated animator JIM CAPOBIANCO. Holiday Sing-A-Long at Wolf Trap: Dec. 1, 2018 at 4:00pm
Kick off the holiday season with family and friends at Wolf Trap’s 2017 Holiday Sing-A-Long! This musical celebration hosts a performance by the United States Marine Band and a Sing-A-Long of Christmas carols and Hanukkah songs with local choir and vocal groups from the metropolitan Washington area. Wolf Trap will be participating in Toys for Tots by collecting new, unwrapped toys at the entrance to the Filene Center before the Sing-A-Long. Donations are voluntary and not required. Admission is free and no tickets are necessary. Parking is free but limited so please plan on arriving early. Bring a candle and join the tradition of exiting the Filene Center with a candlelight processional during the last verse of “Silent Night.” There will also be a ‘Jing-A-Long’ during the singing of Jingle Bells so remember to bring a bell and your holiday cheer!

The Christmas Revels: A French-Canadian Celebration of the Winter Solstice: Dec. 8-16, 2018

The year is 1599, England is swept up in a flowering of music and drama, and master Shakespearian actor and fool Will Kemp has become an overnight sensation by Morris dancing from London to the town of Norwich in just nine days! Queen Elizabeth herself is also on the way to Norwich, and the locals enlist Kemp’s help as they prepare a Winter play worthy of Her Majesty. Step Afrika!’s Magical Musical Holiday Step Show at Atlas Performing Arts Center: Dec. 14, 2018 at 7:30pm
This fun, family-friendly performance will have you stomping your feet and clapping your hands to energetic beats from Step Afrika! and special guest, DJ Frosty the Snowman. Over the last six years, this internationally-renowned percussive dance company has created a contemporary holiday tradition at the Atlas, featuring friendly, furry characters, pre-show instrument-making workshops, photo ops, and even a dance party. Why celebrate the holidays sitting still when you can step with Step Afrika! Step Afrika!’s Magical Musical Holiday Step Show is suited to adults and kids age four and up. Family friendly theater & music productions in and around Washington, DC

The DMV area has an abundance of live productions whether it be theater or music, there’s always something going on. Expose your Bambinos early and help develop their appreciation for dramatic arts and rhythm.

Discovery Theater is part of the Smithsonian for Young Audiences. Shows are generally on a weekday at 10:15 and 11:30 however there are some shows that will have weekend performances. August and September they do not have shows.

In addition to on going shows at The Puppet Co Main Stage, they also feature a series called Tiny Tot shows. These are geared towards the younger audience (0-4 years old) with a shorter show for $5. Show titles vary each week. (7300 MacArthur Blvd. Glen Echo, MD. 20812)

Millennium Stage at The Kennedy Center presents free performances everyday, no tickets required! Shows typically begin at 6:00pm.

Blueberries for Sal at Adventure Theatre: September 21-October 21, 2018
Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk! Sal and her mother are picking delicious blueberries to can for the long winter months ahead to make delicious desserts. On the other side of Maine’s Blueberry Hill, a mama bear and baby bear are filling up for the long hibernation. But somehow Sal and a baby bear have a mixed up adventure and lose their mothers!

Huckleberry Finn’s Big River at Adventure Theatre: February 8 – March 10, 2019
Twain’s timeless classic sweeps us down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Touching and timeless, this tale of friendship against all odds is recreated for young audiences as two best friends demonstrate the power of changing the world. Recommended for all ages.

Winnie the Pooh at Adventure Theatre: March 29 – May 26, 2019
Winnie the Pooh would spend every day of life humming tunes and stopping frequently to eat “a little something.” But today, Pooh and Piglet have to find the Heffalump, watch Rabbit scheme to rid the forest of Kanga’s dreaded bathtub, and help Eeyore search for his tail. Pooh’s intentions are always the best, but his passion for honey and condensed milk keeps getting him into trouble. Recommended for all ages.

The Cat in the Hat at Adventure Theatre: June 21 – August 18, 2019
From the moment his tall, red-and-white-striped hat appears around the door, Sally and her brother know that the cat in the hat is the funniest, most mischievous cat they have ever met. With the trickiest of tricks and craziest of ideas, he is certainly fun to play with. And he turns a rainy afternoon into an amazing adventure. But what will mom find when she gets home…? Recommended for all ages.

Cinderella at Imagination Stage: November 3, 2018-January 6, 2019
This wacky retelling of the beloved fairy tale takes Cinderella on a royal adventure complete with a wisecracking rat, evil stepsisters, and a smitten prince. The Enchanted Bookshop: January 11-20, 2019
During the day, A Likely Story looks like any other bookshop, but at night the characters inside the books come alive. Saturday & Sunday The Kennedy Center presents NSO Music for Young Audiences: String Thing. A “silent” comedic tag-team—bassist Paul DeNola and violinist Heather LeDoux Green—takes a break from the NSO to introduce young audiences to some of the greatest music ever written in a hilarious program of music and mayhem. Most enjoyed by age 3 and up. All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket. Most enjoyed by kids ages 3+. Come early for a Musical Instrument “Petting Zoo” -Starting one hour before the concert, hands-on activities let children get up close with the instruments they’ll see played on the stage.

Judy Moody & Stink: The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Treasure Hunt premieres at Adventure Theatre on Friday and plays through June 3, 2018. Third grade has put Judy Moody in a mood. She’s got to figure out what to include in her “Me” collage, and her know-it-all little brother Stink keeps getting in the way. When the Moody family drops anchor on “Artichoke” Island, they meet Cap’n Weevil with a secret treasure map, launching them on a mad dash across the island in search of gold. But they’re not the only salty dogs lookin’ for loot! Can Judy Moody and Stink outwit their competition in time? Will Judy finish her project? Madeline’s Christmas presented by Creative Cauldron: Dec. 1-23, 2017
She’s Back!! After a sold out run at the Cauldron in 2014, we welcome back everyone’s favorite precocious little Parisian. “In an old house in Paris, covered in vines, lived 12 little girls in two straight lines.” And with that familiar phrase, author, illustrator Ludwig Bemelmans sets in motion the adventures of the brave and resourceful Madeline! In this musical adaptation, Madeline’s schoolmates and tutor are all sick in bed on Christmas Eve, unable to go home to be with their families. So, it’s Madeline to the rescue! And with the help of a magical rug merchant she takes her friends on a Christmas journey they will never forget.

Holiday Sing-A-Long at Wolf Trap: Dec. 2, 2017 at 4:00pm
Kick off the holiday season with family and friends at Wolf Trap’s 2017 Holiday Sing-A-Long! This musical celebration hosts a performance by the United States Marine Band and a Sing-A-Long of Christmas carols and Hanukkah songs with local choir and vocal groups from the metropolitan Washington area. Wolf Trap will be participating in Toys for Tots by collecting new, unwrapped toys at the entrance to the Filene Center before the Sing-A-Long. Donations are voluntary and not required. Admission is free and no tickets are necessary. Parking is free but limited so please plan on arriving early. Bring a candle and join the tradition of exiting the Filene Center with a candlelight processional during the last verse of “Silent Night.” There will also be a ‘Jing-A-Long’ during the singing of Jingle Bells so remember to bring a bell and your holiday cheer!

Step Afrika!’s Magical Musical Holiday Step Show at Atlas Performing Arts Center: Dec. 15-30, 2017
This fun, family-friendly performance will have you stomping your feet and clapping your hands to energetic beats from Step Afrika! and special guest, DJ Frosty the Snowman. Over the last six years, this internationally-renowned percussive dance company has created a contemporary holiday tradition at the Atlas, featuring friendly, furry characters, pre-show instrument-making workshops, photo ops, and even a dance party. Why celebrate the holidays sitting still when you can step with Step Afrika! Step Afrika!’s Magical Musical Holiday Step Show is suited to adults and kids age four and up. Join us in the lobby 30 minutes before show time to decorate your own musical instrument so you can make music with Step Afrika! during the performance.

We don’t have Sirius XM in our car and every other time I try to connect my Bluetooth to Pandora, it fails me. So, we rely on good old fashioned CD’s from talented musicians. We are sharing our favorite “kid music”– which more times than not, adults actually find fun and amusing more so than the Bambinos. These artists are creative and make children’s music fun to listen to. Lucky for us, a lot of these musicians make their way to Washington, DC more than once a year. Keep an eye out for upcoming shows.

Zoom a Little Zoom: A Ride Through Science, brought to you by the music geniuses Cathy Fink & Marcy Marker. Great music comes first with the “Constellation Jig”, a Klezmer treatment to the hibernating “Bobo the Bear” and western swing of “Why Does the Sun Shine?”. Boogie-woogie to “What Makes the Lightning?” or learn how to sound like a cricket with “What Is An Insect?”. The new album includes an Activity Guide for each song by Lynn Baum (former head of School Programs at the Museum of Science in Boston), downloadable from the CD. The guide, which features ideas easy to replicate at home or school using household materials, will be available for free download soon. In upcoming performances and videos, these activities will come alive – experiments and all.

Latin Grammy-winning 123 Andrés takes listeners on an imaginary trip to South America with his newest album release, La luna. The soothing Andean sounds and the delicately composed songs drift listeners of any age to a dream world. Here, a gentle pirate searches for poetic new words, sheep wander on a hillside, and a little blue horse gallops down from the clouds to carry children to sleep.These new and traditional songs, sung mostly in Spanish and featuring a variety of instruments, provide the perfect companion for nap time, bed time, gentle playtime, and even a peaceful drive around town. A few upcoming shows will be on May 5 & May 7 in Washington, DC.

Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights is “A real genre-bender, containing elements of folk, Southern rock, hip hop, pop and punk presided over by a singer whose sheer command of vocal artistry is second to none.” We were fortunate enough to see her this past summer at Strathmore Backyard Theatre.

Jack Forman is a Grammy nominated family musician & on-air host of Sirius XM’s Kids Place Live. Forman presents an album of 12 songs directly inspired by kid-calls on Live From the Monkey House, conversations with Recess Monkey fans, and dinner-table jokes that spin out of control. You’ll love it!

Lisa Loeb who we all know from way back who had the popular hit, Stay (I Missed You) is now entertaining her fans children. We got the chance to see her live in October at Strathmore AMP. She also has a great children’s CD called Nursery Rhyme Parade that we love.

Laurie Berkner turned her most popular songs into fun, dance remixes that will be recognized by all! She performed locally in January at Gordon Center for Performing Arts.

Mister G is a Latin, Grammy winning, kids bilingual singer! He debuted the songs from Mundo Verde/Green World at the National Climate March in Washington, DC which kicked off his extensive US tour. The songs breathe life into the global environmental message from various angles that are accessible and relevant to both children and adults.

Free places to take kids in Washington, DC

Most people think of the Smithsonian Museums, Galleries and Zoo as being the only free places to take kids or offer to visitors who are in town. While those are definitely worth the trip and are family go-to’s when escaping bad weather, the city has many other free options.

Park your car (off the northbound George Washington Parkway in Virginia) at Gravelly Point Park and head to a picnic table, the grass or sit on the dock and watch airplanes take off from Reagan National Airport. There are walking and bike paths that run through the park as well.

Your family can explore the exhibits and then create an art project through Freer and Sackler Gallery ImaginAsia Family Programming.
