Summer may be ending but the fun in Washington, DC is not!

Many students in Washington, DC go back to school tomorrow (sigh/hooray). Summer may be ending for some but that doesn’t mean the fun in the city is ending. There’s still plenty of fun to be had! Splash pads and pools have a few more weeks open.

thThe Beach at The National Building Museum presents a one-of-a-kind destination for visitors, an interactive architectural installation that brings the quintessential summer experience of going to the beach to downtown Washington, D.C. Spanning across the Museum’s Great Hall, the BEACH, created in partnership with Snarkitecture, will cover 10,000 square feet and include an “ocean” of nearly one million recyclable translucent plastic balls. Check it out before it closes Sept. 7.

Good Humor Ice Cream will be giving away free ice cream all week long in Washington, DC.

Washington Nationals allow kids to Run the Bases on games played on Sundays. They have games throughout September.

DC Library has many events each day at various libraries for babies, kids and teens.


Monday-

9:30am: Marsha Goodman-Wood at Busboys & Poets: Rise + Rhyme Series @ Takoma
(234 Carroll St. NW, Washington, DC 20012)
A Busboys and Poets in-house series! Rise + Rhyme is a weekly morning storytelling and performance series for children ages 5 and under, stay-at-home parents, and early rising families of all kinds. Marsha Goodman-Wood,  a D C-based singer/songwriter and music teacher. Marsha is known for getting kids singing and dancing at her shows, setting little toes to tapping with original melodies that mix generous doses of science and positive social messages into songs that are just plain fun.

Tuesday-

9:30am and 10:15am: Baby Storytime at Noyes Library
(10237 Carroll Place Kensington, MD 20895)
This is a storytime geared toward babies and toddlers. Recommended ages are newborn to 18 months. Join us as we sing songs,read books and enjoy fingerplays. Due to the popularity of storytime we are now requiring registration. Please register for the adult caregiver attending.

th-110:00am: Half Pints Club: Make Your Own Berry Tart at Whole Foods
(4530 40th St NW Tenley Circle Washington, DC 20016)
Time to sport your chef hats, Half Pinters! Today we’re making our own snack using pastry shells, fresh berries and greek yogurt! Yum! This class is perfect for kids ages 2-5. Snacks will be provided. Register for the class with our Customer Service Desk at (301) 984-4860.

10:00am: Museum of Natural History’s Butterfly Pavilion 
(10th St. and Constitution Ave., NW)
Every Tuesday at 10:00am you can get into the magnificent butterfly pavilion for free! Make sure and get a free ticket by the entrance. We visited this last month and were amazed by how many butterflies were flying around, some even landing on a shoulder. Look closely and you could spot a frog under some trees.

Wednesday-

Time to sport your chef hats, Half Pinters! Today we’re making our own snack using pastry shells, fresh berries and greek yogurt! Yum! This class is best for kids 2 – 5. Sign up at Customer Service.

Thursday-

10:00am: Harambe at Bloombars
(3222 11th St NW, Washington, DC. 20010)
Think of it as your little one’s first opportunity to express his or her voice (into a microphone), dance, play a drum or percussion instrument, shout, or sing-along to songs that build character, confidence and community.

10:30am: The Great Zucchini at Jammin Java
(227 Maple Ave E Vienna, VA 22180)
Washington’s funniest and most magical preschool and kindergarten entertainer, performs a colorful magic show where every child is a star and guaranteed to laugh. Experience the excitement of the children when they get to learn a magic trick at the end of show.

Friday-

10:00am: Songs, stories & puppets at Bloombars
(3222 11th St NW, Washington, DC. 20010)
30 minutes of storytelling, dancing, singing and entertainment just for kids under 5.

1:00pm-4:00pm: The National Portrait Gallery presents Open Studio Fridays
(Eighth & F St NW, Washington, DC 20001 – Education Center, Room E151)
Friday afternoons at the Gallery feature some creative and free fun! Check out a Portrait Discovery Kit to explore the museum and try a different selection of art material each week.

5:00pm-8:00pm: Friday Night Fishing
(100 Potomac Avenue SE Washington, DC 20003)
Come join Anacostia Riverkeeper at Diamond Teague park (by the Nationals stadium) for catch and release fishing! This is a free event. A wonderful parent/child experience with the Anacostia River.

8:15pm: Jurassic Park playing at Sunset Cinema
(Cherry Hill Park: 312 Park Ave. Falls Church, VA 22046)
Moviegoers are encouraged to bring blankets and picnics. Drinks, popcorn and snacks will be available for purchase.

Looking Ahead–

Maryland Renaissance Festival will be the weekends of August 29-October 25. Kids are free opening weekend!

2015 National Book Fair September 5-12 at the Washington Convention Center
