Saturday Adventures

We’ve got you covered for Saturday plans. As for Sunday, check out our Theater Roundup or Indoor Guide for fun. Also, Lil Omm has many family yoga classes throughout the weekend. Get your little yogis there to stretch and relax a bit. 

This weekend (and next) is the long-awaited Day Out with Thomas at B&O Railroad.  Little Engineers won’t believe their eyes–or their ears! Thomas the Tank Engine will be able to talk to his fans when he returns to the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore! Take a 25 minute train ride behind Thomas the Tank Engine, meet Sir Topham Hatt, and enjoy a full day of live entertainment, activities, and family fun! Saturday-

10:00am-11:30am: Land of Nod Bookmobile at Little Loft 
(511 11th St SE., Washington, DC. 20003)
The Land of Nod’s bookmobile is touring the country, and making a stop at Little Loft. Come to this free family event, make a bookmark, check out some books, and play at Little Loft! All ages are welcome to this free event. While you are there, register for art classes, camp or birthday party.

10:00am-2:00pm: YMCA Healthy Kids Day
(Various locations)
The YMCA is offering you more than just a day of play. Join thousands of neighbors and organizations as we celebrate the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, a national YMCA initiative that inspires families to move and learn all summer long. At twelve free events, you can take part in fun, active play and educational opportunities that will build healthy habits for life. Click here for local YMCA’s participating. 

10:00am-2:00pm: Truck Touch at Spring-Mar Co-Op
(Lake Braddock Secondary School- 9200 Burke Lake Road, Burke, VA  22015)
Touch A Truck, an amazing family event where kids not only see trucks of all shapes and sizes, they can touch, climb, “drive”, and hear them, too! Kids under 2 are FREE, $5 for everyone else! Come rain or shine.

11:00am-3:00pm: Earth Day Tree Fest: Majestic, Green, and Growing at Tudor Place
(1644 31st Street NW · Washington DC 20007)
Celebrate Earth Day and the addition of 19 new trees by Casey Trees to the grounds of one of Georgetown’s greenest spots! Children under five are FREE, and the whole family will enjoy exploring Tudor Place’s 5½ acres of gardens. Join one of the event’s guided, kid-friendly garden tours, or explore on your own with a map. Make seed-balls to take home, plant and participate in crafts, games, and one of two sing-along performances at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. by the popular kids group Nature Jams. Shop for Mother’s Day and your own spring plantings at our plant sale, featuring seeds, heirloom specimens from the estate, and other fun items connected to spring blooms and the land. Stay for BBQ under the trees!  Tasty lunches and snacks available for purchase from Geppetto Catering BBQ Division. All activities run from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. with only 2 Nature Jams performances at 11:30 and 1:30 p.m. Children Under 5: FREE | Members: $5 | Non-Members: $7, Register here. 

12:00pm-8:00pm: Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival
(North side of RFK stadium, park in Lot 7 -which is along Oklahoma Ave. N.E.)
The 6th Annual Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival will draw thousands of Bluegrass fans to Kingman and Heritage Islands Park in celebration of Bluegrass in the Nation’s Capital, the Anacostia River, and Kingman and Heritage Islands. The festival will feature DC’s hottest food trucks, beers from Sierra Nevada, kayaks, climbing wall, and outdoor classes from REI, bike giveaways and bike demos from BicycleSPACE, activities and performances for the kids from Steve & Kate’s CampUkes on the Move, and the DC Public Library., fun snacks and games and amazing bluegrass music including Mr. Gabe and Marsha Goodman-Wood.

  • Quick correction. I'm NOT performing at the Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival this afternoon. Maybe you were confusing me with Mr. Skip, who is scheduled to appear on the Family Stage (in fact, he should be performing as I write this), along with Marsha Goodman-Wood and several other terrific performers.
